Search continues for Pike as desert hunt extends

In the Judaean wastes near the Dead Sea rescue teams search for former Bishop James Pike now missing since Monday night. His wife Diane Pike prays for a miracle while visions from spiritualists provide cautious hope amid the arid, sun baked terrain. Police and Bedouin trackers, aided by army volunteers, comb caves along the Dead Sea shore as the search enters a fifth day with no trace of the California cleric.

British Army Reopens Falls Road in Belfast Barricade Case

British troops lifted barricades on Falls Road in Belfast for the first time in three weeks, promising to guard the Catholic stronghold while vigilante groups and Protestant rivals react. The move followed a show of force by infantry, with tear gas and firearms used by some paramilitary elements. Eight people died in Catholic-Protestant riots centered around Albert Street as the city waited to see if a peace formula would hold.
