East Germany President Pieck Dies After Illness

Berlin AP reports Wilhelm Pieck, longtime East German head of state, died this morning after a heart weakness and lung inflammation. He had been largely a figurehead since illness kept him from public appearances since July 1958. Walter Ulbricht remains the de facto leader. Pieck’s term would have expired in October 1961. he is survived by one son and two daughters.
