Wage Cut At Carroll To Cotton Mills No Real Cut
Enterprise Bureau Raleigh reports on the Harriet mills strike near Henderson. The piece explains there was no wage cut in 1924. the alleged 12.5 percent reduction arose from a discontinued bonus offered in 1923 for full-time work. Wages in Henderson match those at North Henderson mills, with about 800 workers employed, and misperceptions fueled the strike. The state offered mediation via Lt. Gov. Elmer Long and later Gov. McLean’s administration, but the mediation was declined by the strikers and mill owners.
