Steelworkers Strike End Averted by 38 Month Pact

President Abel of the AFL-CIO and chief negotiator R. Conrad Cooper signed a 38 month steel contract at the White House to avert a strike. The deal raises wages and benefits, with estimates around 49 cents per hour and a retirement provision for about 50,000 workers. Earlier talks drove wage discussions and employer relocations with enhanced severance and insurance terms. The agreement, effective August 1, 1987, aims to stabilize industry earnings and prevent price surges while keeping labor costs in line with government projections.
