DETROIT AP Negotiators from the United Auto Workers and Chrysler Corp imposed a news blackout during bargaining as a Wednesday strike deadline nears. UAW President Walter Reuther and Chrysler VP John Leary announced the step to avoid leaks while seeking a contract for about 80 000 workers before the 10 AM deadline. Reuther signaled willingness to extend talks long hours to reach a settlement.
AP report notes gradual acceptance as Southern schools desegregate voluntarily. Across states like Georgia Alabama and Mississippi many districts remove color lines this term with few incidents beyond a taunting yell. In Biloxi seven black first graders join white peers in class and more than 900 Negro students enter desegregated schools statewide.
Senator Hubert H. Humphrey kicked off the Democratic ticket in Minneapolis with a call for a can-do presidency and strong praise for Lyndon B. Johnson. He urged leadership that unites rival views, contrasting with Goldwater and stressing moderation and accommodation.

In Danielsville Georgia two white defendants, Joseph Sims and Cecil Myers, acquitted in the Penn murder case, await federal conspiracy charges. Their attorney says they are ready to challenge the federal government again, as spectators reacted with mixed emotions and the court heard warnings from prosecutors about the value of human life.
Rep William E Miller launched his vice presidential bid in Lockport New York attacking Sen Hubert H Humphrey and linking him to socialist totalitarian aims. Barry Goldwater backed Miller and urged automatic yearly income tax cuts. Miller used vocal crowd engagement to press voters against ADA positions and Lyndon Johnson associations.
Sen. Barry Goldwater pledged on Labor Day that if he wins the White House he will urge Congress to enact a program of automatic yearly income tax cuts. He said the plan would proceed free of political manipulation and would be explained in a Los Angeles speech. He spoke en route to a campaign kickoff in Lockport for Rep. William E. Miller, Miller’s hometown.
