Hodges Defends Pearsall Plan Amid Court Ruling
Governor Luther Hodges told a Washington NC television audience the Pearsall plan does not defy the US Supreme Court and will use every legal means to preserve segregated schools. Pearsall and commission head Tom Pearsall discussed amendments allowing local option units to close schools and tuition grants for private schooling. Hodges warned without law such as Pearsall people may enforce rules themselves, citing Tennessee and Texas as examples. He criticized a Raleigh Times editorial as unfair and warned of mob violence potential.
