Mills Seeks Separate Consideration of Excess Profits Tax
Washington Sept 6 Rep Mills urged that an excess profits tax be debated separately from the $4.508 billion tax bill to avoid delaying overall tax increases. Rep Eberharter plans to block further action until a separate excess profits tax is voted on, with a 95 percent levy proposed on corporate profits above exemptions. The Senate backed the bill last week and pledged early action on the tax next year. The general bill would raise about $4.5 billion yearly, boosting individual and corporate levies while rolling back some excise cuts. In Cuba the sugar town of Cabaiguan reported a sugar shortage with refined sugar scarce and prices high.
