Soviet troops repulsed German attempts to advance on Stalingrad with fierce infantry, tanks, and air support. The Red Army reported holding lines firmly while counterattacks puzzled German forces northwest of the city, with major action near Novorossisk and in the Caucasus region.
American airmen in Flying Fortresses Boston bombers and fighters led a major daylight attack on Rouen railway yards and Le Havre docks, the eighth Forts raid of the war. A third man Walker Grey Matheson was held for arraignment. They faced up to ten years in prison and fines up to 5000.
Washington reports a world record for shipbuilding as 150 keel layings and launches on Labor Day. The Navy credits over 10 shipyards across coasts and cites many destroyers, submarine chasers, and mine sweepers delivered ahead of schedule. In Havana Cuba authorities say Heinz August Luning alias Enrique Luni a 31 year old German export and import merchant from Hamburg is one of the most important spies yet captured in America. He arrived Sept 29 1941 on the Villa de Madrid as a transit passenger for Honduras. He confessed to wide espionage activities and may escape the firing squad by becoming a government witness.
Allied air forces conducted three major raids on Buna New Guinea destroying landing barges boats and equipment. Attacks also hit Japanese ground forces at Kokoda Milne Bay and Milne Bay area as ground mopping up continued with one Allied plane lost near Kokoda.
President Roosevelt prepares a nationwide anti inflation decree to be announced to Congress and the public on Labor Day. Officials hint at an economic administrator and executive wage and farm price controls, with possible removal of farm price ceilings below parity. Brown notes could extend authority under the War Powers act if Congress stalls by October. The Labor Day message proclaims free labor under threat in Europe and recalls gains since 1909 14.
Washington reports War Production Board chair Donald M. Nelson delegated final say to Army and Navy chiefs on Henry Kaiser’s cargo plane fleet plan. A four-member industry panel gave a cautious, not fatal, verdict. Nelson signals he will follow military leadership at a showdown conference. The Navy disclosed that the destroyer Blue and the small auxiliary transport Calhoun were sunk in the south Pacific during the past two weeks. Casualties were few. next of kin will be notified as reports arrive.
