Thirteen Die In Worst Industrial Plane Crash

A two engine Lockheed Lodestar crashed on a farm near Ravenna Ohio killing thirteen aboard. The plane carried executives from Frontier Oil and Allied Oil on a private trip to Ashland Kentucky for a sales meeting. Witnesses reported a spin and a fire with explosions tearing the field.

East Germans Cross Barriers to Safety in West Berlin

Two East German men driving an eight ton truck breached two barbed wire fences and swam a canal to reach McNair Barracks in West Berlin. Border guards fired but no injuries were reported. A second East German border policeman also crossed in civilian clothes.

East Germans Escape Barrier by Truck and Canal

East German police fired on two escapees who used an eight ton truck to breach two barbed wire fences, then climbed a third and swam the Teltow canal into West Berlin. Neither was injured as they fled past Communist guards.

Latins Get Data On Cuba

The Kennedy administration called a meeting of Latin American ambassadors to brief them on Soviet arms shipments to Cuba. Kennedy said Cuba received short range missiles torpedo boats and communications gear with about 3500 Soviet technicians in the country. Senate leaders pressed for details while Rusk and McNamara briefed lawmakers in a closed session.

A surge of north air sent temperatures to record lows for the date across the central U S as autumn arrives. Cities from St Cloud to Chicago reported cooling with readings from 28 to 50 degrees while rain spread east of the Mississippi and into the southern plains.

Fire damages Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh

A fire destroyed the Hayes Barton Baptist Church auditorium and main education building in Raleigh early today. Three firefighters George Coats Lelon Frazier and Reginald Poole received minor injuries but were treated and discharged. The blaze started before dawn after a descent by a church member Lester O Nea l who saw smoke. The sanctuary roof and wall collapsed as crews fought the flames. Damage to the church education building and smoke and water damage to the rest were extensive. Insurers cover much of the loss. the church has about 1600 members and sits at a busy Raleigh intersection.

Sharp Quake Rocks Salt Lake City

A strong earthquake struck Salt Lake City this morning causing ceiling collapses in at least one house and cracks in buildings downtown. No injuries were reported though several people suffered heart attacks during the tremor.

Amendment To Tax Bill Is Killed In Senate Vote

The Senate rejected a proposal to let self employed people fund tax deductible pensions up to 2500 annually. House passage and differing ceilings were noted, with Mansfield pledging a separate bill later. A second amendment easing financial status proof for medical assistance was adopted by voice vote.

Ben Bella Seizes Algiers After Brief Civil War

Ahmed Ben Bella's Political Bureau regained control of Algiers after a clash with guerrilla Wilaya No. 4 forces. The deal demilitarized the capital, halted the regular army invasion, and left Ben Bella's provisional government to police with Saadi's Ben Bella loyalists in the Casbah. More than 150 were killed or wounded in the fighting as army units held a wide perimeter around the city.

Soblen Deportation Expected to proceed to the United States

Britain rejected Robert A. Soblen final clemency plea and ordered his deportation to the United States as soon as practicable. Soblen, a 61 year old psychiatrist and wartime Soviet spy fugitive, fled to Tel Aviv, then Britain after bail was forfeited.
