In Barcelona on September 5, a major general strike led to violent clashes as syndicalists fortified their headquarters, firing on police from rooftops while Civil Guards pressed assaults. After six hours, police brought in light artillery and the fighters surrendered.
Chilean government moves to bomb the mutinous naval battle fleet at Coquimbo with air strikes from Talcahuana to Coquimbo after rebels refused surrender. Former Army pilot Jimmie Doolittle topped the Bendix air race by 3,362 miles flown yesterday, then set a new transcontinental record. He averaged 225 mph coast to coast, landing in St. Louis at 10:22 p.m. after a Cleveland to St. Louis leg with a Laird Solution aircraft.

Ushiro Japan Sept 5 Flying a monoplane that failed twice before Moyle and Allen of California arrived and began final preparations for a nonstop 4400 mile flight to Seattle. They flew from Tachikawa near Tokyo 375 miles in four hours sixteen minutes and loaded 1020 gallons of gasoline. The route would cross the southern Bering Sea the Aleutians and along North America’s west coast.
New bright belt tobacco markets close as figures from the first week show averages $1 to $2 per hundred pounds lower than last year in most markets, with Goldsboro bucking the trend at 39 cents higher. Wilson leads poundage at 1,731,574 pounds, while Greenville, Kinston and Rocky Mount report large volumes and varying averages.

In Gloucester Massachusetts early today coast guardsmen stopped a 60 foot speedboat the Lassghen carrying 400 cases of liquor after a chase just outside the harbor. Joseph Mello 39 of New Bedford was killed by gunfire as the boat fled four others were arrested and the Lassghen with its cargo was taken to the Gloucester coastguard base.
Ten thousand wild horses on the San Carlos Indian reservation near Coolidge dam are to be destroyed or relocated to eradicate duroine, a highly infectious equine disease affecting the herd. Authorities aim to curb spread and preserve other livestock in the region.
