Rail Halt Threat To Business
The nation faced a major disruption as 20,000 non operating railroad workers walked out. Pennsylvania lines blocked 10,000 miles of tracks, halting 136,000 daily passengers and delaying freight across the East Coast. Some mines and plants cut staff, and companies arranged alternate transport as unions pursue job classification talks. Steel and auto sectors expect slower demand with a tentative turnaround after Labor Day.
