Kingston Jamaica burials proceed for eighty more victims of a historic rail disaster as 80 others lie in a mass grave near the wreckage at Kendal station. Rain hampered burials and search. a government investigation will begin.
Seventeen Negro students returned to Sturgis High School with about 30 state police guarding a crowd outside. Troopers, led by Captain Stewart Miller, kept watch as 100 townspeople gathered. one soft drink can was thrown but no arrests were made. The adjutant general said police would stay as long as needed to ensure attendance.
National Guardsmen under Gov. Faubus prevented nine Negro students from enrolling at Central High School in Little Rock while Faubus insisted he defended peace not federal judges. Whites-only troops controlled the scene as the school opened with chaotic uncertainty. More details on page five.
In a statement to the five power subcommittee of the U N Disarmament Commission Zorin expressed his government stance on the main terms of the Western package plan for a limited first stage disarmament treaty He said he was surprised Western delegates queried Russia's attitude to various proposals in the package
A Soviet TU104 jet liner landed in London en route to the United States marking the first Soviet civilian flight to America. The 18 hour Moscow to McGuire mission included 19 passengers and 12 crew, with stops at Keflavik and Gander. An American guide crew will assist at Gander before entering U.S. air space.

A tall Negro man, Willie Mack Oliver, 21, shot his girlfriend Cora Colson, 25, at National Springs Co. in High Point. She died 35 minutes later at High Point Memorial Hospital. Oliver was arrested after tossing the revolver. he claimed a lovers’ quarrel sparked the attack.
A Navy jet crashed into two occupied homes in Berkeley near Lambert field, killing Lt. John R. Renshaw. Families narrowly escaped injury as the burning plane tore through residences, leaving one house largely destroyed while the other survived with minor damage. Residents recalled near misses as the jet's takeoff troubles led to the fatal impact.
President Eisenhower calls his approach middle of the road governing. He says conservative principles apply to modern problems to form a middle-of-the-road government. He expects criticism from both sides and notes no real opposition with right-wing Republicans.
A band of white students and spectators attacked 15 year old Dorothy Smith as she left Charlotte High School after registering as the first Black student there. Beth Smith, 15, faced a disorderly conduct charge in the incident and was questioned before being released. A taunting group followed the girl shouting slurs and remained outside the classroom despite police warnings from Chief Frank Littlejohn to disperse.
President Eisenhower flies to Newport Rhode Island for a seaside vacation of golf and fishing as the Navy’s guest. He and Mrs. Eisenhower will stay in a 12 room white stucco house. He plans some commuter flights for Washington conferences and will sign remaining bills upon return. Golf at Newport Country Club and local fishing await.
