Traffic deaths were nine on Labor Day weekend day one with two additional accidental drownings not reported. National Safety Council forecasts 400 potential fatalities over the holiday period. Michigan mobilizes 450 National Guardsmen to assist state police at danger points.
In Old Fort, North Carolina, two Black men were beaten in separate incidents while Police Chief William Autry denied racial tension. Governor Hodges condemned violence, noting no warrants filed. Albert Joyner, 30, who sought to register Black children at the white school, and William C. Brittain, 52, a janitor, were victims amid debate over school integration and a Supreme Court ruling.
Pittsburgh detective Fred Matheny says he hopes the teen fatal auto crash case will deter other youths from racing on public highways. The 16 year old driver Billy Lasch Jr faced charges after his friend Mickey Gascia was killed in a drag race near an intersection. Protests followed the ouster and the Qued Zem massacre, with French expeditions causing heavy Moroccan casualties. An interview with General Latour du Moulin is expected before any public decision.
President Juan D. Peron signed a bill making Buenos Aires residents subject to a state of siege. The measure suspends constitutional guarantees and allows indefinite detention without trial. The House and Senate, both Peron lists, approved the bill, targeting unauthorized meetings and subversive publications.
