Sir Malcolm Campbell on the Salt Flats of Utah posted an average 299.875 mph to claim a new land speed record. His first run reached 304.311 mph in 11.83 seconds, while the second was 12.18 seconds for the measured mile.

Secretary Hull declared the Ethiopian government’s concession to the African Exploration and Development Corporation would not affect U S policy in the Italo Ethiopian dispute. Jim Watson a 38 year old Negro farm hand was arrested at 4 a.m. near Fairmont and jailed on charges of an attempted assault on a four year old girl from J B Bruton’s Robeson County farm. Watson fled after the incident triggering a countywide manhunt. he was wounded when fired upon by citizens and is expected to face court next week. Avery Powell was charged with concealing a fugitive.
Queen Astrid of the Belgians was interred in the Royal Crypt at Laeken in a solemn procession from the palace to St. Gudule Cathedral. King Leopold III, injured from a car crash in Switzerland, led the royal cortege with European dignitaries and mine rescue workers in attendance as bells tolled and 33 guns fired.

The executive committee of the local government commission sold 12000 dollars of Roanoke Rapids storm sewer securities to Interstate Securities of Charlotte at par with 4 1/2 percent interest. The committee approved 55000 dollars in Thomasville bonds for city hall construction with PWA funds and 25000 dollars in Goldsboro cemetery bonds as more applications await action.
The state supreme court heard oral arguments on appeals from the second judicial district and will hear more cases in docket order this week. Thirty four cases are set, including appeals of Oriel Gunter, Robert Thomas and Arthur Gosnell, all sentenced to death for robbery and murder in Madison County.
Florida storm swept Tavernier near Miami last night leaving several missing and injured, according to Er Ghent of Jacksonville director of veteran relief. He said only one building, a general store, remained standing and Tavernier with about ten families lies 65 miles south of Miami.
