Twenty dead in Ft. Bragg training accident

At Smiths Lake during a routine training problem the 406th Engineer Brigade suffered an accident that left 18 soldiers drowned and four hospitalized. Two soldiers are missing as a board investigates. Bodies were recovered within hours and next of kin notifications delayed.

Plane Crash Kills France’s Violin Virtuoso Jacques Thibaud

A French Air France four engine airliner crashed on Mt Comet in the Alps killing famed violinist Jacques Thibaud and 41 others. Rescue teams spent hours reaching the site as no survivors were found among 9 crew members. Thibaud and his daughter Suzanne and accompanist Rene Herbin were en route to Japan for concerts. Thibaud, 72, had long been France’s leading violinist with a career starting at age eight.

Truck Crash Kills Marvin Howard on U S Highway 15 A

Bennington, S C residents report Marvin Howard of Andrews South Carolina died in a six ton lumber laden trailer crash on U S Highway 15 A four miles north of Bennettsville. The truck overturned into a tree and burned as fire brigades contained the blaze. Identification was by license plate. bodies found outside the cab with legs trapped.

State ESC Lays Off 51 Workers

The Employment Security Commission of North Carolina cut its budget by Congress and issued layoff notices to 51 employees. With reduced federal funds for the year ending June 30, 1954, staff will drop by more than 100 from 814 for Sept 16 to June 30, 1954.

Two Youths Face Murder Charges in NJ Beating

100 Happy Americans Return From POW Exchange

The U N Command says 100 Americans were repatriated after interviews with Red Cross teams, bringing total POW returns to 3027 as Operation Switch nears completion. Chartered Airplane Vanishes Over Pacific Northwest

A Regina Airlines twin engine plane carrying 21 or 22 soldiers and two civilians disappeared after leaving Monterey California at 1 40 p m. It was last heard from over Portland Oregon five hours forty eight minutes later and did not radio Toledo Washington or McChord Air Force Base near Tacoma. Officials expect a downed plane somewhere between Portland and Toledo with search plans delayed by cloud cover and possible rain. The soldiers were en route from Ft Ord California for possible overseas shipment.

Legion calls for all-out war if Korea talks fail

The American Legion at its 35th national convention urged use of every weapon including atomic and hydrogen bombs to drive Communists from Korea if peace negotiations fail. Dulles Warns China on Korea Indochina Aggression
