A weak cold front brought temporary relief from heat in the Piedmont with the high around 91 Monday. Washington area and southern regions expected partly cloudy skies with a chance of both afternoon and evening showers into Wednesday, then more showers possible Thursday.
Forty prisoners of war escaped Phu Quoc Island camp after killing a guard and wounding another. Nine escaped prisoners were killed and two wounded. 29 remained at large.
