Washington AP report says Democratic congressional leaders gave President Johnson an optimistic assessment after a weekend at his Texas ranch. Mansfield stated only a few bills remain to be acted on this session and noted 41 of 51 Johnson recommendations had passed both houses, with three in conference.
The Titan 3A military rocket launched from Cape Kennedy on its maiden flight but failed to reach orbit. Officials report 95 percent of objectives achieved before radio contact was lost after 13 minutes.
Senator Goldwater resumes campaign plans after a seaside respite in California. He will record television spots for national airing as he resumes the presidential race against Johnson, with a rally in Prescott noted and travel planned through California, the Midwest, and the South in September.
Ten major Point hosiery mills announced this afternoon wage hikes for all production workers effective Sept. 28. Increases run about 5 cents an hour. The mills named include Adams-Millis hosiery division Silver Knit Melrose Crown Amos Kiddie Tot Triangle Harriss Covington Daisy Slane.
Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy won a large margin in a New York Democratic test vote as the party moved toward nominating him for the U.S. Senate to oppose Republican Kenneth Keating. The State Committee backed Kennedy about five to one, enabling his name to appear on the ballot at the party convention. The convention audience heard Stratton urge unity as Kennedy’s nomination was urged despite tensions over the party’s stance on the Goldwater-Miller national ticket. The Conservatives nominated Henry Paolucci for Senate.
Trooper W. T. Herbin was found shot three times with his own revolver in a cornfield off U S 401 near his patrol car. Willie Smith Jr. confessed and faces murder charges along with three Pinehurst men Will Allan Albert Reeves and Rudy Clegg Bruton. Hearing set Sept 8 in Raeford. Survivors include wife Beatrice and a 13 year old daughter.
Berlin marks the 25th anniversary of Germany’s 1939 invasion of Poland. West Berlin and East Berlin commemorate the war’s victims, remembering soldiers and civilians from the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Holland. Willy Brandt leads ceremonies, honoring those who died and the start of World War II.
A grand jury cleared a New York police lieutenant of criminal liability in a slaying case. District Attorney Frank Hogan said the panel found no basis for criminal charges and suggested civil action over suspending the officer, while civil claims could involve a civilian referee.
A woman identified as Josephine Johnson, about 50, pleaded for help from the top of her sinking car as it disappeared into the Great Miami River in Dayton. Bystanders watched as she cried I cant swim and went under as the vehicle slowly sank with no rescue attempt successful.
Maj. Charles E. Brown testified he was asleep when Lemuel Penn was shot and could not swear the blast came from a passing car. Defense questions centered on whether the wound was from the attackers in the July 11 killing of the Washington educator while driving with two Black companions in Madison County.
The North Carolina elections board orders Madison County to recanvass six precincts and throw out 3642 of 5269 votes cast, shifting Norton ahead of Ponder and prompting a new tally of 6887 to 3245 if upheld. Norton had carried several counties but lost to Ponder by 400 votes. absentee ballots and alleged fraud cited. The board urged immediate action before the November general election deadline.
