Senator Maybank Dies at 55 in South Carolina
Burnet Rhett Maybank 55, longtime South Carolina Democrat, died in his sleep at his Flat Rock summer home from a heart attack. Funeral at St. Michael's Charleston with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Memorial service planned at St. John in-the-Wilderness here. His passing reduces Senate Democrats to 46 with 48 Republicans and one Independent. Maybank, a 1942 reelectionist, served on Banking and Appropriations committees and pushed housing legislation.

Watkins Delays McCarthy Hearings to Honor Sen Maybank

Two Wrecks Kill Four Persons in North Carolina
A pair of motor vehicle crashes near Wilson North Carolina last night killed four people. Edward Alston 22 Thelma Lee Coley 20 and David C Ward 22 were riding together when they hit a railroad boxcar at a crossing near town. Fannie Coley also of Rt 1 Fremont was injured. Alston and Ward were soldiers stationed at Fort Bragg. Ken Anderson died of a heart attack after learning his son had perished.
