Moore County recorder's court will hold a special session tomorrow to try 44 accused bootleggers after a mass roundup on August 22. Bonds range from 50 to 500 dollars. The roundup added seven more bootleggers to the list.
Norwalk Connecticut police say 32 year old Miss Curtis is charged with murder in the mercy killing of her 73 year old father John W Curtis after being found in a gas filled home beside his body. She was found in a coma with the gas on and was treated at hospital. Curtis had suffered advanced lung cancer and weight loss. he had been bedbound since April 19 after his wife died.
Secretary of State Cordell Hull, 80, is critically ill from cerebral thrombosis at Bethesda Naval Medical Center. He suffered severe attacks, with a prior critical episode in May 1951, and his condition remains very poor. Hull, long a key U.S. diplomat, helped shape Pan American solidarity and World War II diplomacy.
Eisenhower addressed the National Association of Letter Carriers pledging better treatment from a GOP administration and more efficient mail service. He and Sen. Carlson condemned attempts to force federal workers into political contributions and assured no discharges would occur if Republicans win in November. Carlson cited a Kansas Democrats letter urging $100 contributions from rural carriers.
A tropical storm packing winds to 55 mph lashed the Carolina coast and southerly states then neared Washington D C with heavy rains and 30 to 40 mph winds and squalls up to 55 mph. Four people died as the storm tracked northward across North Carolina and Virginia threatening downstream floods and highway closures.

Analysis shows from 1949 to 1952 North Carolina ran excess spending of about 287.3 million dollars beyond receipts. By December 31 1952 total excessive spending could surpass 300 million with two thirds funded by borrowing against future receipts and one third from past surplus.
