Gen Paul D Harkins stated in Saigon that at least 1000 of the 15000 American troops in Viet Nam will be withdrawn within two months as part of a White House plan. He said victory in this war is near and noted ongoing sporadic fighting.
In Americus Georgia five young integration leaders seek injunctions in a federal courtroom to halt prosecution and interference with integration activities. Attorneys claim officials conspired to injure oppress threaten and intimidate citizens. Four youths remain jailed without bail on incitement charges under the 1871 insurrection law, a rare move in integration disputes. Donald Harris, 24, of New York, is among those jailed. no court action until state officials submit a reply.
In Maine, two hunted and two men and women were missing after fierce snowstorms on Mt Katahdin and surrounding areas. Searchers, aided by helicopters, pressed through deep snow as weather hampered ground efforts and broadened the hunt.
An attorney for North Carolina oil firms challenged CP and L's claim that promoting all electric homes would balance its yearly power demand. Reuben Goldberg urged evidence to support Harris's assertion at a State Utilities Commission hearing into CP and L's plan to push all electric homes and apartments. Fidel Castro announced that Cuban authorities have captured several CIA agents including two Canadian pilots identified as Ronald Patrick Lee and William David, who allegedly entered Cuba on sabotage missions following Hurricane Flora.
