Insurance Commissioner Waldo Cheek announced a training school for prevention of incendiary fires will be held at the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill November 5 through 8. The program is open to firemen and law enforcement officers.
Raleigh officials announced plans to train Boy Scouts as air raid alert and drill instructors for schools. E Z Jones said New Bern Scouts are already receiving civil defense instructor training.
U S District Court in Wilmington issued two injunctions against A M Kennan and C H Smith for employing children under 16 during school hours while harvesting strawberries. Labor Secretary Maurice Tobin filed the complaints. Judge Don Gilliam signed the orders barring the underage labor.
Premiums totaling 37880.91 were awarded to over 2000 North Carolinians and nine exhibitors from five other states at the 1952 State Fair. A preliminary report from fair manager Dr. J. S. Dorton shows livestock exhibitors from 50 counties won 16085.60 and farm and home products were shown by 85 of the 100 counties.
A two cent fare increase in Burlington’s city bus system is proposed under a filing to the State Utilities Commission. M&B Transit Lines, Inc. holds the franchise but suspended service for days after the City Council rejected downtown stop plans. Southern Coach Co. of Durham operates buses on a 60 day trial and may buy the company at its end.
About 1000 nurses are expected at the 50th convention of the North Carolina State Nurses Association in Raleigh starting Tuesday. The event, themed Half Century of Achievements Nursing Promotes Health Concept, will be attended by the NC League of Nursing Education and the Student Nurse Association of North Carolina.
The body of 67 year old Martin L Cannon former president of Cannon Mills Co and leader of Carolina Textile Corp and other mills was returned to Charlotte after a death in a New York hospital following an operation. Police in Greensboro searched for thieves who cracked a safe at Guilford College for the third time in a month and escaped with $3000.
Ike makes a four speech swing in the Chicago area after a dawn plane trip to Illinois. He defends his integrity, attacks corruption, and rails at attacks linking him to anti Catholic and anti Negro charges while urging an end to bribery and influence peddling.
A large group of out of town friends and business acquaintances attend the funeral for James Alexander Gray 63 chairman of the R J Reynolds Tobacco Co board. Gray died Wednesday after a heart attack in a local hospital and will be buried in Salem Cemetery with Dr Mark Depp and Bishop J K Pfohl officiating.
Fires in North Carolina and adjacent areas were brought under control but risk remained high as winds pushed flames toward the western mountains from the northeast. A Hendersonville man, Ely Sumner, 47, was jailed on arson charges tied to multiple blazes in Buncombe and Madison counties. 40 fires were reported in the region with losses estimated at about 1,000 acres in Henderson and 2,000 in Madison. TVA and local crews fought new fires near the North Carolina border and in the Dismal Swamp area as authorities urged extreme caution with outdoor burning.
Washington reports say the Defense Department counters Republican criticism by pledging a substantial increase in the South Korean army in the near future. It denies that Gen. Van Fleet will be relieved for backing Eisenhower's critique of Seoul’s training program.
South Korean infantry troops withdrew from Triangle Hill after about 20 hours of fighting with Communist forces entrenched in bunkers and trenches. The battle featured heavy artillery and aerial strikes as U N and Chinese forces clashed with high casualties reported on both sides.
Adlai E Stevenson cut short his campaign trip to fly home to Illinois and help quell a prison riot at Menard. His absence from the train left aides in charge as he headed toward St Louis to address the Menard riot and protect Pennsylvania electoral votes.

James Hill known as Three-Gun, a self-styled maniac, and accomplice James Douglas were captured in Florida after hijacking, kidnapping multiple victims across Tennessee Georgia and Florida. Police halted the pair at a roadblock near the state line ending the months long crime spree.
In the United Nations, Australia’s R G Casey opened a day of conciliatory mood as Britain and France pressed cautious questions on Mr Vishinsky’s peace move. France urged dialogue with Asian neighbors and Russia to join peace efforts, while Selwyn Lloyd posed four questions on prisoners repatriation and Panun proposals to test willingness for armistice.
Illinois Governor Adlai E. Stevenson personally directed state police forces in a mission at Menard prison to end a riot in the east cell block. Seven hostage guards were freed after troopers and growers stormed the facility, with Stevenson arriving from Pittsburgh and meeting warden and officials to discuss settlement.
Raleigh reports Everett Jordan, state Democratic chairman, predicts Adlai Stevenson will win North Carolina by 250000 to 300000 votes next Tuesday. He estimates Stevenson will total 600000 votes in Tar Heel State while Dwight Eisenhower could receive 300000 to 350000.
