In Newmarket England Wynchwood Abbott held off 32 rivals to win the Cambridgeshire Stakes. Commander HI finished second with Highlander third as the favorite paid off at 1 to 1 and Commander III was quoted at 40 to 1. Highlander had 22 to 1 odds.
Gastonia reports H. McKelvier resident manager of the Loray mill operated by Manville Jenckes Corp charged with criminal conspiracy. The warrant followed a fight near the mill during the general textile strike. W. O. McMahan, a union member, swore to the warrant.
In Hertford on October 31 Ross Handle Champ CC Bate man and Walter Brooks were sentenced to prison for 10 to 15 years each after being found guilty of robbing someone of 810 and a pistol by force of arms in Perquimans County Superior Court this afternoon.
Langley of Wilmington was granted parole by Gov. Ehringhaus after serving more than two years for the Buncombe County slaying of Linnie G. Russell at a filling station. The governor cited newly developed evidence and said Langley is innocent. Langley was released into the custody of the New Hanover public welfare superintendent and Louis T. Moore.
Washington October 31 Chairman Byrnes asks Governor Pinchot to provide the Senate campaign funds investigating committee with any information about a alleged conspiracy to conceal expenditures in the Pennsylvania primary and election campaigns. He cites a statement said to show Reed and Schnader violated election laws.
Senator James Byrnes confirmed receiving a letter from Senator David A. Reed regarding Democratic campaign funds but refused to comment until Reed publishes his letter. Byrnes said it would be improper to release the letter and that publication rests with Reed.
Dewey Rogers, 24, died when a truck driven by his brother Joe struck a cow on a highway near Union. Angus Clendenning received head and side injuries in the crash.
In Monticello Indiana deputy attorney general Edward Barce moved to serve a habeas corpus on eight witnesses tied to John Dillinger escape. Calcutta India October 31 American fliers from the Melbourne derby John Wright and John Polando said they will claim damages from the Persian government for detaining them over 24 hours near the Persian border. They were stripped of an engine but found a cylinder intact and may resume the Melbourne flight or sail to London November 10 to confer with the air race committee. They were ordered out at bayonet point after their release.
