Forest Closures Order in 26 Western North Carolina Counties
Rain fell across much of North Carolina but did little to ease forest fire danger prompting Gov. Sanford to close forests in 26 western counties effective midnight. The order bans hunting fishing trapping camping and brush burning within 500 feet of woods. Mayor Powell of Pittsboro said a shower helped little and noted water shortages. he sought Army aid for a pipeline but was told no facilities were available. State Forester Fred Claridge recommended the closure.

Preparations For First Unmanned Gemini Launch Begin
AP reports from Cape Canaveral on a 90 foot Titan 2 launcher rolled to complex 39 as Air Force contractors start unloading the rocket for the first unmanned Gemini test. Vibration, the so called pogo effect, hinders the two stage booster and could affect the guidance and payload placement. Lt Col John Albert says the issue occurs 90 to 140 seconds after launch at 11 cycles per second. Engineers consider cleaning the second stage engine or redesigning it to add more orifices while Gemini aims for an astronaut/space rendezvous mission late next year.

Bank At Kenly Robbed Of Four Thousand Dollars
A nervous gunman with a 45 caliber army automatic pistol robbed the Lucama Kenly bank on Kenly's main street late morning, escaping with between four and five thousand dollars. Cashier Tom Lucas said three employees and two customers were inside when the holdup occurred. The suspect wore khaki pants and a checked shirt and fled in an automobile after forcing everyone to lie down. Kenly lies at the junction of US 301 and Interstate 95 in Johnston County.

Mountains Get First Snow Of Season In NC
Snow the first of the season fell overnight on western North Carolina mountains. Mt Mitchell reached half an inch with 21 degree temps, Grandfather Mountain at a trace and 26 degrees, with Balsams and Great Smokies also covered. Canton logged 34 degrees as forests show a snowy contrast to valley colors while drought kept fire danger.
