Associated Press reports that President Truman and Governor Dewey claimed a victory by their rival next Tuesday would aid communists. Both warned that world events hinge on the November 2 ballot while trading barbs on foreign policy, unity, and criticism of the opposition’s tactics.
Democratic senatorials nominee Kerr Scott urged North Carolina to back the legislature to spur prosperity. Republican George M. Pritchard accused Democrats of broken promises and called for a change in administration. Melville Broughton touted racial progress as campaigns moved toward Tuesday’s election with rallies across the state.
Miami dispatch reports Winston Salem researchers presented aureomycin as a promising treatment for Rocky Mountain spotted fever at the 42nd annual Southern Medical Association meeting. In three treated cases fever subsided in about three days, versus typical 13 days with no treatment.
Washington reports foreign aid officials plan to ask Congress for 1.2 billion dollars to carry the Marshall Plan through April June next year. Berlin reports Gen. Sir Brian Robertson, British military governor, said there would be no war for the next few months. He noted a Russian police force in their zone of Germany estimated around 400,000, armed with mortars and armored cars, and said he would not pursue a western equivalent.

The FBI cleared a $50,000 shortage at the Bank of Virginia Norfolk by arresting Clarence Markland Jr., 25, bank sales and finance manager, in New York. He admitted taking funds via fictitious advances to Norfolk automobile dealers and issuing cashier's checks. Markland said he and his wife were in NYC to celebrate their first wedding anniversary and spent most of the money gambling.

In Greensboro Superior Court on day two of the torture robbery case, Mrs. Waddell identified defendants Charlie Fales and Earl Black from masked assailants who tied and tortured her husband to locate a safe dial. Deputy Sheriff Donovan corroborated the couple's testimony detailing the April 18 incident and the assailants' actions.
