A reader asks where to look for Mars and how to identify it. The response notes Mars is reddish and twinkles less than stars, and suggests southwestern sky around 7 to 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. during October to November 1969, with guidance on using recent astronomy books and planetary charts.
Democratic Rep. William M. Colmer uses his Rules Committee chair to block a Negro voting rights bill. He plans hearings November 18, delaying House and Senate action until after the year ends, while support remains strong for extending the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The administration opposes, citing regional scope, and Senate filibuster risks loom.
The Viet Cong broadcast claimed it would free three American soldiers as a sign of lenient policies. Spec. 4 Willie A Watkins James H Strickland Jr and Coy R Tinsley were identified as missing in action with dates and units noted. US Command awaited confirmation of release details and location.
Furniture manufacturers report strong early activity at the October Southern market in High Point and along the Furniture Highway in Piedmont North Carolina. Washington report on rising political broadcast costs as witnesses like Charles A. Vanik describe the 1968 race in Cleveland where $30,000 was spent to defeat Frances Bolton. Senate panel considers a bill to require broadcaster discounts for candidates, amid fears campaign finance favors the rich. Major networks cut rates 25 to 50 percent in response.
Mass picketing and a few scuffles marked the General Electric strike against 147,000 workers. AFL-CIO official Paul Jennings praised the action as nearly 100 percent effective and orderly. Arrests occurred in Schenectady and Lynn as pickets disrupted plant access and trains carried workers through lines.
In Indianapolis a drag race on a narrow street ended when Dalton Wallace's car struck Stephen Coleman's sedan. Eight people died in the blaze including Coleman's pregnant wife Levina and seven children and relatives. Wallace survived with serious injuries. the other racer fled.
UNC Chapel Hill faces a stand by its campus disruption policy as the executive committee plans to present the original plan to the full board for approval. Student body president Alan Albright and faculty delegates urged revisions, but trustee leader Archie Davis said the policy was set and would not change.
