Short Sales Week Hits Flue Cured Tobacco Markets
Flue cured tobacco auctions in the Carolinas and Virginia opened after a weekend recess with a pending suspension of sales after tomorrow. The move stems from Great Britain’s tobacco import ban and follows a drop in export and domestic grades. Prices weakened across belts with losses of $1 to $3 on most grades and larger declines on inferior lots. Some mid belt leaf and primings edged $1 to $2 higher, while border belt losses ranged from $1 to $4 up to $7 on select grades.
