Jonas Declines To Run For Governor In 1964

Rep. Charles Raper Jonas of North Carolina announced he will not seek the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 1964. He will seek a seventh term in Congress from the 8th District, citing thirteen years in Congress and a desire to continue public service. Survival Of Miners Doubtful In Dam Flooded German Mine

In Broistedt Germany 43 miners remain missing after a dam burst flooded an iron mine. Rescuers pressed on despite a halt in water decline and no signs of the men found overnight. Seventy nine escaped earlier, seven more were rescued on Friday night, all unharmed after exposure.

Kidnapped Girl Found Unharmed In Michigan

Michelle Moran, a 9 year old from East Lansing, was abducted Friday from her mother’s car at a shopping center. She was found alive in a ditch near Lansing after a large search by 200 police and civilians. the suspect description included a spectacled dark complexioned man. Marijuana Operation Uncovered in Middlesex County Farm

Federal agents and the State Bureau of Investigation disrupted a three acre marijuana field seven miles south of Middlesex North Carolina. Hurricane Ginny rumbled near the North Carolina coast then headed seaward before turning toward land again. The Weather Bureau warned precautions along the southeastern North Carolina coast while the storm’s center and winds likely remained offshore. Ginny’s path briefly shifted toward land as Helena, a new tropical storm, formed in the Caribbean drawing attention away.
