Duke capitalized on key breaks to topple the N C State Wolfpack 20 13 before 20 000 in Durham. After trailing 7 6 at halftime Duke scored twice in the fourth period, turning a recovered fumble into a score and later another TD to erase a late rally by State.
UNC defeats Wake Forest 26-7 as Jim Cummings throws two TD passes and Wade Smith adds a 62 yard run. Tar Heels gain 315 rushing yards and 166 passing while holding off a Demon Deacon aerial attack in a wild ACC test before 35,000 at Chapel Hill.
The Yardstick quarterback launched a 45 yard pass to Schroeder who beat the Wake defense for a score with 2:21 left in the first half. UNC failed on the conversion and built a 12 0 lead early in the third period as a kickoff return set up nine rushing yards. Further details planned for page 2 C.
The Devils needed four plays and a five yard offsides penalty to reach the end zone. Dutrow connected with Wray Carlton for a 10 yard TD and Brodhead to Doug Padgett for the extra points, giving a 14 7 lead with 13 minutes left. State then drove to Duke’s 20 before Throwbridge hit Pepe for a TD as State drew close.
Workhorse Tom Moore scored two first half touchdowns to spark Vanderbilt to a 39 6 rout of Virginia in an intersectional showdown. Arnold Dempsey of Virginia connected for a fourth quarter score but Vanderbilt dominated both on the ground and in the air, gaining 161 passing yards and 152 rushing yards.
Durham report on Duke defeating NCS Wolfpack 20 13 after Ken Throwbridge fumbled a late fair catch. Coach Earle Edwards lamented the costly error while Duke coach Bill Murray credited the turning point to the mishap. More details on page 5-C.
UNC coach Sunny Jim Tatum praised Wake Forest for a bold passing attack led by Norm Snead and Charlie Carpenter after North Carolina defeated Wake Forest 26 to 7. He noted Wake’s spread formation stretched coverages while UNC backs Joe Bonecutter and Neil MacLean moved the ball up the middle.
Auburn over Maryland 27-7 after a tense first quarter as Auburn’s defense forced fumbles and interceptions. Johnny Kern and Tommy Lorino connected on key passes while Janmy Reynolds sprinted 62 yards for a late third quarter score. Maryland led briefly on a Ben Scotti 68 yard TD, but Auburn claimed momentum and sealed the win.
