President Eisenhower and his officials push a rapid windup to the congressional election campaign with a nonpartisan label. He hints at a final talking tour before polling day and reports unemployment dropping to 2.7 million, the first dip below three million this year.
Secretary of State Dulles declares no new talks with Russia on West Germany's future as he and President Eisenhower convene a televised cabinet meeting. Informants say Asia threats to Southern Indochina and Formosa will be reviewed amid Western European security concerns.
Italy formally assumed control of Trieste ending nine years of Allied governance. Crowds braved rain as Italian units entered the city while 24 jets thundered overhead. Maj. Gen. Edmondo de Renzi greeted residents and the W. G. Haan transported about 1,700 American troops away.
A United Nations special committee reported that gradual integration remains the likely road to racial peace in South Africa. It warned agitators exploit strife, urged opponents of segregation to abandon racial supremacy theories, and noted the need for staged progress rather than sudden change. The second unanimous report was drafted for debate by the Special Political Committee.
The United Fund Red Cross drive reports progress with $85,713 pledged and gifts tallied toward the goal. Division leaders are urged to attend a 4 PM meeting tomorrow in the YMCA all purpose room to submit remaining reports and refine the overall contributions picture. Clarence Allred noted some groups have not submitted reports yet.
Senate issue centers on bias claims by Senator McCarthy against Watkins and two other members of the six member censure committee. McCarthy asserts prejudice tainted the committee before its members were named and before the report was filed. Watkins rejects provocation and says the matter should wait for the official report and Senate session.
The Labor Department reports September living costs fell three tenths of one percent to 114.7, the lowest since last April. Foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, coffee and eggs, drove the dip. The index compares with May 115.0 and October 1953’s 115.4, year to year down four tenths. Aryness Wickens cautioned on October’s figure, noting wholesale prices also declined.
Thirteen Puerto Rican nationalists convicted of seditious conspiracy against the United States were sentenced to six years in federal prison. Federal Judge Lawrence E. Walsh pronounced the sentences as the group sat quietly, hearing their fate.
A replacement juror Genevieve Pelsay cried and asked to be excused during the trial of Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard for the 1954 Marilyn Sheppard murder. Defense questions and state objections followed as the jury reshuffle continued.
Cloudbursts and landslides hit Salerno Province Italy killing at least 125 with many missing or injured. Salerno city and surrounding hamlets suffered severe destruction as homes collapsed and streets choked by mud. Flooded coastal towns including Amalfi Maiori Cava dei Tirreni and Marina di Vietri faced heavy damage and power outages. Police reported 58 dead in Salerno and up to 100 missing or unaccounted for as the Interior Ministry warned the toll could be the highest in recent Italian floods.
White House says President Eisenhower would like to campaign in critical states but has not decided. GOP leaders press for a swing after two nationwide radio TV appearances. unemployment fell to 22.7 million, a drop under three million this year, a key issue in industrial states.
London ports remain largely closed as 43,000 dockers stay out in a 23 day walkout. Arthur Deakin urges workers to return, while government fears of paralysis grow. Some London workers resume four ships but many are still idle. Liverpool and other ports show mixed returns as industry faces shortages and factory impacts.
A Vienna spokesman said the U S Embassy has established contact with Cleveland architect Hermann Field who was reportedly freed from a Polish prison. The State Department was asked to comment, while Warsaw broadcast claims Field was a victim of a spy plot. Field had gone to Warsaw in 1949 to learn about his relatives and disappeared after a flight to Prague.
The Supreme Court refused to hear four appeals challenging New York and New Jersey fair trade laws and the McGuire Act that binds manufacturers to state minimum resale prices. Justices noted no substantial federal issue in two cases and gave no explanation in the others.
The North Carolina Board of Conservation and Development met for a quarterly session in Charlotte. Talks covered Piedmont growth and water resources with Gov. Umstead ill in Dare County hospital. The Wildlife Resources Commission eased bass limits for next year allowing 10 inch black bass to be kept. this year’s limit is 12 inches. R. W. Esehmeyer urged the change saying it would increase bass available to fishermen. Proposals include reinstating $1.10 daily fishing permits for impounded waters and possible regulations for a tun plan on Abbott's High Rock Lake 300 acres in the county.
