The justice department studied the government contract with the United Mine Workers to avert the November 1 strike by 400000 soft coal miners. An eventual termination could threaten Secretary Krug if he holds the contract binding while the government runs the mines.
Nanking October 26. The U S peace envoy General Marshall remains unable to mediate as the Chinese government presses a war to seize Communist territory. Chou En Lai and Marshall met three hours with little disclosed progress. Kuomintang factions clash over strategy, while Sun Fo and other liberal ministers seek negotiated settlement amid factional friction and continued military actions.
Attorney General Tom Clark fired O. John Rogge for quoting from a department report in a Swarthmore speech alleging Nazi schemes to defeat Roosevelt in 1936 1940 and 1944. Clark said Rogge willfully violated justice department rules by sharing confidential material from his wartime sedition cases report. Rogge claimed German officials aided the anti Roosevelts effort and cited Goering and a Herman Schmier name, with other controverted claims.
Frederick Livingston, U S S conciliator, declared the maritime strike on the gulf and east coasts ended today. The setback and resolution come as tensions ease following talks.
