Court upholds state tax on chain stores in North Carolina
Supreme Court sustains the state’s right to tax chain stores. A. J. Maxwell, revenue commissioner, states about $60,000 yearly since 1929 totaling $180,000 under the statute, paid under protest and now the state’s. The law taxes each chain store unit after one free store, at $50 per branch, with prior law limiting to six or more stores. Dennis Brammitt, attorney general, praised for handling the case. The prior invalidated law is replaced by a constitutional measure applying to two or more stores operated by a person or farm.
