A reader recalls a fall mulching method for Irish potatoes known as a lazy bed. Ground is prepared in autumn by piling leaves and garden waste, then seed potatoes are placed on top and covered with 12 to 14 inches of straw mulch. In spring the mulch is lightened and lifted to reveal tubers, which remain scab-free and flavorful.
