Iry Caldwell Addresses Grangers On Farm Cooperation
Iry B. Caldwell of Greensboro told about 400 delegates at the State Grange session that cooperation must counter autocratic private ownership to keep business and agriculture thriving and democracy intact. He outlined two paths: government price fixing or better farm marketing machinery with farmer control and market access. He proposed 14 points, including expanding farm purchasing power, lowering costs, expanding markets, keeping taxes and distribution costs minimal, and extending social security to farmers. He cited the need for farmer controlled marketing, balanced production, and honest money terms while warning against expanding new lands until needed. The war department has allocated $153,500,000 for aircraft and engines in four months.
