Tokyo AP reports Dr. Umberto Saffiotti of Chicago Medical School found high vitamin A reduced lung tumor development in hamsters given a benzpyrene cancer agent attached to dust. He warns results do not justify smoking or dust exposure and notes excessive vitamin A can harm humans.
A Singapore leftist unions letter to the American consul general warns President Johnson not to step on Malayan soil. Police watch for possible joint Singapore Kuala Lumpur protests while Labour party raids seize banners denouncing Johnson as a war criminal.
Flames raged as the 572 foot Gulf Stag burned off Morgan City Louisiana. Seven of 40 crew members were missing after the vessel began to sink midmorning while The Atlantic Prestige rescued 28 including Captain Larry La Rue. Coast Guard units aided survivors and treated three burned men.

In 1961 Blake, long jailed for nine years of spying for the Soviet Union, escaped from a high security British jail near London. He vanished after a 5 p.m. roll call during a 2 1/2 hour open-cell period, reportedly aided by a waiting car and a tool to break a second story window. Police pursue clues in a case tied to deaths or disappearances of Western agents.
