Ford faces a potential one billion dollar cost over three years as UAW ratification votes loom after the 47 day strike. Ford executives push for resumed production if the work stoppage ends this week. UAW Ford Council plans votes Tuesday and Wednesday across 25 states with local meetings at 8 pm. UAW president Walter Reuther expects workers back by Thursday, Ford labor head Malcolm Denise says earliest return is Wednesday.
U S marshals hauled the last hardcore Vietnam war protesters from the Pentagon grounds at midnight ending a violent weekend rally. The Defense Department counted 240 detained at Occoquan Va with 439 arrested earlier. Injuries included 13 marshals, 10 soldiers and 24 civilians.
Tens of thousands turned out in the New York metropolitan area to demonstrate support for U S soldiers in Vietnam. The Newark parade drew about 60 000 participants and equal spectators, with large turnouts in New York City boroughs and Long Island.
A 39 year old Hammermill Paper Co lab technician Leo Held opened fire at his car pool, bosses, and neighbors in Lock Haven and Loganton Pennsylvania, killing six and wounding seven others before being captured. He had driven to work with neighbor Mrs Margaret Ramm and later shot her at Piper Aircraft plant, then killed Donald Quiggle and wounded others before his arrest. He was wounded by police and hospitalized in serious condition.
Enterprise staff writer Jim Hawkins reports first three days of the October Southern furniture market as highly active. Kroehler Manufacturing Co. up holstery sales manager T L Henderson says business written is ahead of any prior southern market. Globe Furniture Division sales manager Frank Sizemore notes strong attendance and aggressive ordering. Lane Company president Hampton Powell says traffic is about 10 percent ahead of last October and buying mood is good.
In Washington the House voted to curb executive agency spending while defeating Rep. Sikes’s bid to cut House payroll by 5 percent. His amendment would curb a payroll near 50 million annually with many workers earning over 20 thousand. The panel also blocked extending a 4.5 percent pay raise exclusion to Congress while supporting antipoverty worker exemptions.
Public works funding remains intact as House and Senate battles continue. Attempts to trim the sprawling reclamation, flood control and river projects failed. A directive urging President Johnson to cut federal spending by 6 to 8 billion dollars faces opposition, with the Senate Appropriations Committee removing the provision and a House-Senate clash anticipated this week.
