Liberal Democrat Lar Massell won the Atlanta mayoral race defeating Republican Rodney Cook. Massell carried heavily in Negro districts with 62,632 votes to Cook's 51,289, becoming mayor with Maynard Jackson as vice mayor, the first Black official in that role.
In Atlanta Massell defeats Cook in the runoff to become the city’s next mayor. Massell claims a strong mandate while Cook concedes and hopes for city unity. Negro voters and observers formed a decisive share, guiding aldermanic gains for blacks and elevating Jackson to vice mayor.
South Vietnamese authorities announced that Friday the 18th Infantry Division would take over the Black Horse base camp 40 miles east of Saigon, enabling further American troop withdrawals from Vietnam. The base housed 14 miles of roads and 955 buildings and had been the operating base for the 11th Armored Cavalry and later the 199th Light Infantry Brigade. Allied reports said fighting remained low with 145 enemy killed in multiple clashes and South Vietnamese losses at three dead and 32 wounded.
LAS VEGAS AP A major source of financial support for the foundation linked to Supreme Court Justice William O Douglas came from a deal set up by Meyer Lansky. Albert Parvin signed the contract paying Lansky 200000 as a finder’s fee for introducing buyers to Hotel Flamingo Inc. The 1960 sale to Florida investors funded a foundation created by Parvin, with Douglas later serving as president and sole salaried officer. A federal grand jury in New York is investigating related parties, but not the Flamingo sale.
