Jule C. Smith, 72, Lexington merchant dean, shot himself in his living room after a morning trip to his store. A note stated an intention to give relief. Stokes A. Smith found the body with a sofa pillow under the head. coroner’s jury returned death by self action.
Asheville reports the Buncombe county grand jury moves into full proceedings in a corruption inquiry. Two special attorneys, Kingsland Van Winkle and Thomas L. Johnson, were appointed to aid the jury as deliberations begin at 2 p m. Subpoenas issued for 23 prominent business and professional figures.
A special panel was ordered to report to Avery county superior court to select a jury for Clinch Franklin who is charged with killing Gurney Cannon with a baseball bat while Cannon was on his way to church.
108 ANGELES Oct. 21 AP Winnie Ruth Judd 26 slender blonde wife of a physician and daughter of a rancher remained at large as officers seek her for the Phoenix trunk murders. Victims Mrs Agnes Leroi 32 and Miss Hedvig Samuelson 24 were found in trunks shipped from Phoenix. Det Insp D A Davidson said it may be a case of a deranged mind. Search focused near Laguna Beach artists colony 60 miles south after a motorist report of a hitchhiker matching Judd’s description.
Donald C. Beatty of Birmingham, leader of a South American early history study expedition, left Charlotte by plane for Atlanta en route to Miami where the Latin America study will begin. He spent the night in Charlotte and planned to continue to Miami after Atlanta.
Bishop James Cannon Jr has relinquished supervision of the Brazilian and Belgian Congo conferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, while insisting he has not resigned. He asked Bishops Moore and Darlington to take over those duties and said he will continue his lifelong work against liquor despite federal grand jury indictments related to his 1928 presidential campaign.
Caldwell Ga Oct 21 AP Albert Warren Jr nearly believed the tale of a cow jumping over the moon as his animal wandered from Warren Stables into the Caldwell Livestock show and entered unofficially. It earned the blue ribbon for first prize after judging, drawing attention when the cow wore the award.
In Greensboro on October 21 bankers from North Carolina subscribed 2 625 000 toward the national credit corporation’s 500 000 000 credit expansion drive. They passed a resolution endorsing Hoover’s plan to hold cotton off the market as part of the effort to relieve economic distress.

Dr. L E B Smith of Norfolk Virginia was chosen by Elon College trustees to become president after Dr W A Harper resigned. Smith, an Elon graduate, was elected at a Southern Christian Convention session. He will decide by November 16 whether to accept. The convention also voted $50 000 to support the school, ending retirement rumors.
Retired Rear Admiral Newton A. McCully files libel for 25000 damages against Norwegian steamer Verona over the sinking of his yacht Chiaka in Chesapeake Bay on September 7. Verona now lies in Baltimore. Libel served by Hughes Little and Seawell, attorneys for Verona. McCully and five adopted Russian children were rescued by Verona and brought to Norfolk.
In Belleville, five miles west of Danville, an engineer and a fireman along with two other railroad workers were injured when two Rock Island passenger trains collided early today.
Major James H. Doolittle, famed American flier, set a new air speed record by flying from Ottawa to Mexico City via Washington in 12 hours and 36 minutes aboard his plane the baby powerhouse. He landed at Valbuena field at 3 16 p m mountain standard time after stops in Washington Birmingham Ala and Corpus Christi Texas.

Oct 21 Everett McLean a South ern Pines negro and suspect in the murder of B H Beasley chief of police of Southern Pines was captured in Tarboro after driving Beasleys car wrecking it and gravely wounding his wife Pearl Gilchrist McLean The suspect fled to Tarboro by bus and was taken into custody several hours later He carried 306 in money and had discarded the gun Details from Pearl who spoke from a hospital bed outline the shooting and the wreck with no motive yet established The Moore County officers joined the hunt and the Virginia case against McLean remained pending at Boydton awaiting pros by the commonwealths attorney
Hollywood actor Richard Dix real name Ernest Carlton Brimmer aged 27 married Winifred Coe 23 in Yuma Arizona. The couple honeymoon plans unknown with relatives traveling by plane. Betrothal announced this week after a romance starting four years ago at a dinner party.
Coroner W. W. Harvey announces no inquest will be held into the death of William B. Vaught Jr of Gate City from a fire he started while asleep. He was overcome by smoke before he could reach the bathroom and died Monday night in Greensboro.
A floor fire at a central Charlotte furniture store caused the stock to burn completely and damaged the building, with firemen estimating stock loss near 10000 dollars. The blaze drew hundreds when reports tied to the nearby Carolina theater sparked panic in the block.
Washington October 21 Premier Laval and President Hoover will focus on broad economic readjustment with debt revisions and arms reduction. Washington October 21 The Interstate Commerce Commission proposes pooling funds from freight surcharges to aid less prosperous lines as railroads face rejection of a 15 percent rate increase. Carriers must submit a pool plan by December 1 and it could run only until March 31, 1933. The commission defends feasibility after earlier doubts from carriers and shippers.
