The plane and one crew member were returned to Soviet custody while two officers seeking asylum were granted refuge in the U S zone. The Russians demanded the return of all three. General Keyes offered to return the plane but not the men. The two officers chose to stay. the sergeant returned.
A cold air mass that affected the western and Piedmont Carolinas pushed eastward and today cleared. Temperatures rise toward normal with fair, warmer conditions expected. Asheville dipped to 29 and Mount Mitchell to 23 while many other cities logged 32 to 39 degrees.
A blaze in Kansas City killed three children aged seven, six, and one trapped in an upstairs hallway. Parents George Smith and Dorothy Smith escaped by leaping from a porch roof after dropping Ralph, ages unknown, to safety. The fire damaged the home and hindered rescuers from reaching the victims.

In Baltimore on October 20 the grieving parents of Baby Jo Ann Mezzanotte urged the abductor to negotiate at their church and notify police of any hint no matter how trivial. The 2 1/2 month old was taken from a parked carriage while her mother was in a drugstore. Police search for a woman seen near the scene carrying a pink and white blanket. The mother, Mrs Michael Mezzanotte, a railroad worker, was described as not wealthy. The couple urged contact with St Katherine's Church in Baltimore.
