Charles W. Carollo Kansas City's 240 pound gambling king was sentenced to six years and a day in prison by Federal Judge Merrill E. Otis. He received four years for perjury, one year for mail fraud and three years for income tax evasion with possible reduction to one year if delinquent taxes are paid.
Erwin Beal, a North Carolina convict awaiting appeal for murder conspiracy, testified before the Un American Committee that he fled to the Soviet Union on a false passport with Communist Party aid. He said the party pressured him to return to the United States and claimed Soviet officials knew of his trip.
California Senator Johnson denounces the push to repeal the arms embargo as an idiotic assumption he says would drag the U.S. into war. He argues Hitler will not conquer Europe, warns against gambling with American lives, and favors staying out of a broader conflict while preserving the nation’s economy and government.
A federal district court jury convicted three of four tried in the second WPA strike case. In the first case five of eight were convicted. More than 150 others were indicted on conspiracy to intimidate and interfere with WPA workers, leading to disorders.
