Alfred de Marigny on trial in Nassau Baha faces murder charges in the death of his wealthy American-born father Sir Har Oakes. He claims innocence with his wife Nancy Oakes de Marigny supporting him and sharing in a substantial estate valued at about 14.686 million dollars.
Nassau Bahamas October 19 a housemaid describes serving a dinner to Sir Harry Oakes and three guests at Westbourne before leaving. She says she prepared the bed with an insecticide spray later used in an apparent attempt to burn the bed and body. Harold Christie, one guest who stayed overnight, is linked to the rooms Christie used and body found next morning. The trial continues with Christie expected to testify.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower lauded infantrymen for their endurance and sacrifice in North Africa and Italy. He cited the British Eighth Army’s desert campaigns and the heavy ground actions that defined the early theater, stressing the vital role of foot soldiers.
American submarines have sunk or damaged 460 Japanese vessels since December 7, 1941, with 31 ships sunk, 36 probably sunk, and 105 damaged. The Navy released figures in a Washington communique, noting 98 ships sunk, 5 probably sunk, and 45 damaged in updated counts.

In October a large group of about 1500 Americans and other nationals left Japan on the ship Teia Maru and boarded the exchange liner Gripsholm to return home after months in Japanese custody. The evacuees marched ashore in sunlight, exchanging jokes with a nearby line of restrained Japanese guards as they prepared to resume life outside internment camps. An American liaison kept movement orderly while families, suitcases, and even a few babies moved toward freedom.
A C Reynolds Jr representative from Buncombe County resigns his seat contingent on acceptance by the armed forces. He is 29 with one child and states he is volunteering for service. Reynolds noted the selective service act forbids induction of legislators and will resign if accepted. He had been mentioned as a candidate for speaker of the 1945 house.
In Moscow Secretary of State Hull and British Foreign Secretary Eden meet with Molotov as the big three begin discussions on wartime strategy and post-war issues. Moscow presses focus on a western front, with plans for future Allied talks and frontier questions arising from the gathering.
Allied forces push along the Volturno River as Fifth Army fans out across the line capturing Santo Stefano Montecilfone Gioia Libri Falcchio Pontelatone Albignano and Bressa. British troops break the barrier north of the Volturno while air raids rain on targets from Skoplje to Rhodes.
The State Department announced a third lend-lease agreement among the United States United Kingdom Canada and Soviet Russia signed in London. It covers armaments equipment materials and food to the USSR with reverse supply of raw materials. Canada becomes a signatory for the first time and provisions have been effective for three months.
