The resignation of Prime Minister Lloyd George was officially announced this evening. Viscount Peel, the secretary of state for India, also was announced as quitting.
Federal prohibition officer H H Cheatham is charged with murder after shooting Doug Dunham in Salisbury during a liquor raid. Prosecutor B D McCubbins issued the warrant and sent it to Sheriff Alexander in Iredell county where Cheatham attends federal court. Cheatham says the shooting was accidental while Dunham accuses deliberate targeting.
Portland officials rounded up more than 200 men on orders of Mayor George Baker amid warnings of an I W W waterfront invasion. About 350 dock workers were detained. 225 were jailed on vagrancy charges while others were released. Officials said I W W papers nationwide urged a mass march to Portland and the Pacific coast.
Rev. H A Fesperman denounces indifference as the greatest enemy to church and city in a First Reform sermon. He cites the 30 percent who do 90 percent of work, warns God will replace the slackers, and invites baseball fans to hear his Life Game sermon, noting his past as a pitcher.
High Point Rotarians heard A L Brooks of Greensboro discuss political and economic conditions in Europe after World War I. He argued Europe suffers mood and poverty, credits Britain's resilience to taxation, and urged American political industrial and moral aid. The club approved a December 28 ladies night and moved to back a northern park area rail line with a Cincinnati to Goldsboro through train via Southern Railway influence.
Minnesota delegates press a resolution to remove Brigadier General Charles E. Sawyer for utter unfitness at the American Legion convention in New Orleans. The rehab committee defends Sawyer, saying he acted on his word. Adjutant King from Minnesota insists not a single cent has been spent in Minnesota on Sawyer's rehabilitation funds.
London reports indicate Prime Minister Lloyd George and his ministry have resigned in the wake of a unionist split. King George received Lloyd George for an audience, then the premier met a miners delegation but stated he could not consult due to resignation.
George F. McCauley known as the human fly drew a large crowd as he climbed the Wa chovia Bank building blindfolded. He paused twice to rest and removed the blindfold only at those points. McCauley claims to be the only person to climb blindfolded unaided. He planned a trip to Winston-Salem to arrange another climb and expected to return to High Point.
Edgar Taylor of igro died in a local hospital after being shot by his stepson Will Pennington on Oct. 7. Police say warrants have been issued for Pennington who has not yet been arrested. Authorities are pursuing him. The shooting stems from a domestic dispute.
New evidence in the Hall Mills murder case is said to be in the hands of authorities according to a source close to Somerset County Prosecutor Beekman and Middlesex County Prosecutor Stricken. Detectives have intensified activity over the past three days, signaling ongoing inquiry.
New York October 18 The cotton market opened with a slight decline then turned firmer after the opening call. Overnight selling orders were absorbed and December futures rose to around 28.24, about 15 points higher. Early quotes: October 22.65 December 23.05 January 22.90 March 23.00 May 23.00 July 22.70.
One hundred sixteen passengers were removed from the Colonial line steamer Concord by the freighter Mohegan after a fire broke out in the cargo hold. The blaze lasted about an hour before the fire was controlled with help from the freighter crew. All passengers were transferred twelve miles from shore amid 30 mph northwest winds. no injuries were reported.
D K Kellogg president opening the 16th annual meeting of the Railway Treasury Officers association in Asheville. Nearly 100 delegates from almost every state attend the three day conference to summarize aims and achievements through cooperation.

Alvin Lumpkin was elected district governor for 1923, with Wilmington chosen as next meeting site.

An electrical storm in Johannesurg, Union of South Africa, yesterday killed nineteen people. Nine people perished in a single house due to exposure and fire.
Judge Walter F. George of Vienna won the Georgia Senate nomination to fill the late Thomas Watson's seat. The race left Gov Hardwick’s interim appointee Mrs. W H Felton to finish her term after the election. George swept the state defeating Seaborn Wright and the third candidate by a wide margin.
The Western North Carolina conference met in Monrof for its 1922 session under Bishop Collins Denny. It reported pastor salaries totaling 385,909 for an average over 1,400 per pastor and presiding elders averaging 3,159. It also discussed the centenary fund, noting a pledge of 1,509,000 with 660,000 paid, and announced transfers of EB. K. Creel and C. A. Johnson to the North Carolina conference.
The marriage of Mrs Aden L Mills formerly Margaret Rutherford stepdaughter of the late William K Vanderbilt and Sir Paul Dukes British war hero took place in Nyack New York last week and was revealed tonight.
Vice President Coolidge spoke in Sundrew Hanover before 260 New Hampshire and Vermont party leaders. He said the present administration stands in no need of apologies and defended its policies.
