The German command said Russians seized Virbalis and pushed to Schirwindt inside East Prussia. Attacks along the border extended from Kalvarija toward the south with heavy tank and fighter bomber support. Forty one enemy tanks were said destroyed as the defense collapsed.
A fierce hurricane with winds up to 160 mph battered Havana Cuba and headed toward Florida keys. Weather officials warned of hurricane winds and high tides spreading over the Florida keys and southern peninsula as the storm moved northward toward mainland Florida.

London reports British troops capture Venray forming a 10 mile front in eastern Holland near Duiveland as Berlin says half a million men stand ready for battle in the Netherlands. Canadians advance to the west forcing back German pockets near Antwerp port.

The father Howard Wolfe a truck driver related the meal and the children fell ill after returning home. Neighbors recalled hearing the children at about 2 pm before the deaths were discovered.

Reno Nevada October 18 new testimony to amend proceedings set for November 9 to support Doris Duke Cromwell claims she did not commit fraud to obtain her Nevada divorce from James H R Cromwell of New Jersey. Attorney William Woodburn said depositions would counter a charge that she was a New Jersey resident and not Nevada resident as claimed. Duke is in Cairo Egypt with the U S Seamen's Service and will not attend the hearing.

A female majority exists overall with 600 000 more women over 21 than men, and marriage rates have fluctuated from 10.5 to 13.1 then 11.8 per thousand.
