Paris reports heavy casualties as French forces clash with German troops along the Moselle area near Luxembourg. Local trench raids and moves of troop materials continue as both sides push amid a broader offensive east of the Saar.
The U S Maritime Commission reports 300 survivors rescued by the independence hall from the Yorkshire and City of Mandalay about 500 miles off France. The President Harding and Blaiberg also need aid as cutters race to assist in the North Atlantic storm.
Prime Minister Chamberlain told the House of Commons Britain had made a good start in the war against Germany and had minimized losses. He cited eight enemy aircraft destroyed over British coasts with no British planes lost, and noted German losses may exceed twenty five percent. He warned of expected attacks on fleet bases and denied damage to Hood Repulse or Ark Royal.
Bishop James H. Straughn of Maryland presided at the Gracehd Grace Conference in Greensboro on October 18. Dr J Richard, president, read the annual message and the conference noted the pastoral leadership while Bishop Clare Purcell and the cabinet attended.

Governor O Daniel approved extradition for Richard Gray Gallogly a life term prisoner who escaped custody with his wife claiming Texas justice The case notes he pleaded guilty to a murder he did not commit under pressure from a companion and says Georgia promised early release after a short sentence Gallogly has served 11 years in custody.
A New York advertisement by Franklyn L. Hutton states he will not be responsible for debts incurred by his wife Irene C. Hutton. Hutton, father of Countess Barbara Hutton, could not be reached for comment. Office aides knew nothing and did not expect contact for a week.
Dispatches from Kagoshima report 38 dead 33 missing and many injured after a typhoon struck Kyushu's southern tip. Damaged towns and widespread flooding are described as rescue operations continue.
J. J. Haverty, 80, founder and longtime chairman of Haverty Furniture Companies, died at his Atlanta home after several weeks of illness. A prominent Catholic, he was named knight of the order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Pius XI. Haverty built a major southern furniture firm with stores in 18 cities and was a noted art patron with an extensive private collection.
British papers condemn the Scapa Flow sinking of the Royal Oak as a grave failure in naval defense and urge revised plans and alarms. The Times calls for inquiry. the Express says Churchill cannot be blamed and presses for energetic naval upgrades.
The kings of Norway Denmark and Sweden and Finland's president opened a session in Stockholm to discuss neutrality, trade and safeguarding independence amid wartime. King Gustaf hosted with foreign ministers present as ministers met at the foreign office after a brief opening.
President Roosevelt urged King Gustav V of Sweden to voice U S support for neutrality and order under law as the Stockholm conference presses for peace. The United States will watch the conference with interest, and 20 other American republics sent similar messages.
Swiss observers report German forces massing in the Lauterbourg sector near the German French frontier as preparations for a larger push are anticipated. Concentrations at Karlsruhe and Lauterbourg advance amid French reinforcements and long range bombardment. Tanks assemble near the Siegfried line but crossing the Lauter remains a prerequisite for any offensive.
