An unusually warm San Francisco afternoon saw temperatures in the eighties as a demonstration unfolded beside the main stairs and reflecting pools, with onlookers noting the calm scene despite activity nearby.
Phillip Ray Styron 17, of Allen Jay area, was found fatally shot in a field near Giles and Weaver streets behind Fairfield Plaza after a late-night yard rolling spree. Deputies say he was shot once in the back by a resident of Allen Jay, possibly during the prank.

Seven defendants, including three South Americans, face conspiracy charges over four pounds of cocaine from Ecuador. two, Susan Wheeler and Robert Wyler, are tied to a separate murder in Sullivan County.
In Catawba North Carolina Negro leaders urge defensive firearm ownership after four mid September shootings and a severe beating. Sheriff T Dale Johnson declines to comment claiming no publicity. FBI and North Carolina SBI are probing the incidents with federal involvement.
In Detroit a 16 member Nefcy family becomes a two-house unit after buying a neighbor’s home across the street. Six teenagers sleep in the dormitory while younger siblings stay in the original house, with cross-street meals and a Saturday chores schedule. The move adds two and a half baths and four bedrooms, easing friction between the generations.
U S forces launch Medina north of the DMZ with about 5,000 troops including 1st Marine Regiment battalions and South Vietnamese units. In the first week 21 Marines and 44 Communists were killed and 167 Marines wounded. Air raids hit Haiphong bases and key bridges as the operation proceeds amid monsoon rains.
National Hurricane Center monitoring two tropical depressions one about 200 miles southeast of the Carolina coast moving northward, another about 500 miles east of the Lesser Antilles moving westward. Conditions only slightly favorable for intensification into tropical storms today or Wednesday. If any reach storm strength, it would be the eighth of the year.
