Ed ward Quigley, 25, of Brooklyn, joined the famed list of Brooklyn Bridge jumpers by leaping into the East River from its center. He and two friends had been drinking, and after claiming he could do it again, he jumped 133 feet to the water and was found by a police launch about an hour later. He swam ashore with minor bruises.
Four children aged 1 to 10 were beaten on the head with a hammer by their mother in North Charleston. They were reported in satisfactory condition after initial serious to critical status at Charleston hospital. The mother, Bonnie Prohaska, 31, is in a Columbia state hospital after transfer from a psychiatric ward. Father John Prohaska, 31, works as a rubber company executive.
