The welding took place in a depressurized chamber under high vacuum. success details were not disclosed.
North Carolina colleges held antiwar events with speeches and protests on Moratorium Day. About 37 of 74 colleges joined observances, UNC Chapel Hill and Duke saw attendance drop to about 50 60 percent. Some leaders hailed the day as a success while others doubted its impact. Saigon reports show American battlefield deaths near a three year low for the week with 62 Americans killed and 384 South Vietnamese forces and 1,887 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese killed. Wounded totaled 1,573 Americans and 1,681 South Vietnamese. South Vietnamese casualties rose sharply while U.S. deaths push the total since 1961 to 38,969.
The House Armed Services Committee approved a Nixon administration plan to draft 19 year olds by a lottery 31 to 0 and sent it toward the House floor. The panel rejected proposals to end college deferments by roll call 21 to 10, while defense and draft officials argued the lottery is the fairest method for organizing calls next year.
