Washington scientist Rob ert Jastrow of the Naval Research Laboratory says Russia’s Sputnik, in orbit for 12 days, could plunge and burn up within a week. He notes altitude readings around 147 miles and suggests disintegration is likely depending on design and altitude.

In Concord, Geraldine Shue Gainey admitted to having a child with a man other than her husband while charged with bigamy. The judge, witnesses, and defendants sought a practical solution as Gainey pleaded guilty with cohabitation. The court paused for a funds collection to aid the girl.
Soviet leader Khrushchev sent near identical letters to seven West European Socialist parties urging cooperation for Middle East peace while condemning imperialist oil interests and U.S. and Turkish threats. The wife of Morton Sobell calls testimony linking her to Soviet spy Rudolf Abel a smear. Reino Hayhanen testified Abel ordered payments to Mrs Sobell and to probe her potential as an agent. Sobell serves 30 years for Rosenberg ring. court case ongoing for a new trial.
Secretary Dulles warned the United States must guard against a Syria or Soviet attack on Turkey. He stressed missiles could become decisive within a decade and urged rapid defense spending while noting the satellite launch spurred national interest in the missile program. He cautioned against Soviet overlordship plans and said the US would not seek to dictate to other nations.
