Consumer Protection Highlights in New Advisory Bill
Washington AP outlines a proposed consumer protection plan creating an executive advisory unit for the president. It would form a 15 member consumer advisory council with five year terms representing consumer producer and public interests. The five year cost is estimated at 38.8 million dollars with 33.4 million for running the agency and 200 staff in year one. It includes consumer education safety programs and trade secret protections. The measure lacks subpoena power but could aid other agencies and Senate approval is uncertain with possible veto risk. The White House backs the bill while House GOP leaders signal changes could trigger a veto.
