Stock market edges higher amid slow trading and earnings watch
The Dow rose 4.32 to 767.05 as advances outweighed declines about 3 to 2 in thin dealings. Analysts cite technical steadiness but say enthusiasm hinges on third quarter earnings and broader stimulus signals. GDP data show September output at a record 985.2 billion dollars with a 14.1 billion gain. Oil stocks lead activity with Gulf Oil up to 29 percent and Atlantic Richfield rising 4 percent. Texaco up 3 percent. Canadian and Almera oil issues also higher.

Nixon Aims at Welfare Reform and Budget Overhauls in Lame Duck
In the lame duck session the Senate faces a fight over welfare reform as the administration pushes the family assistance plan. The House passed it in April but the Senate Finance Committee rejected it, with supporters hoping to attach it to a Social Security bill blocked by a trade rider. Other Nixon items include a job safety bill electoral reform manpower training and school aid desegregation funding. Ehrlichman blamed political gridlock, while the White House notes some progress with a tough anticrime bill sent to Congress.
