Real estate optimism and market stability in 1961
Real estate brokers forecast a strong 1961 year with demand centered in the 16000 to 20000 dollar range. Mortgage money remains accessible with FHA loans at 5 to 5.5 percent and conventional loans around 5.5 to 6 percent as soured markets ease. Meanwhile High Point gains in bank debits, Martin Marietta merges to form a major missile systems firm, and Johnson Motor Lines expands its interstate network.

Single Shot Law Will Be Studied By Supreme Court
The North Carolina Supreme Court declined to rule on the constitutionality of single shot voting ordinances while ruling against T. A. Watkins, a Black candidate who challenged Wilson City’s charter provision. The court held Watkins would not have won even if disputed ballots were counted, so no constitutional rights were violated. The 1957 Wilson Charter barred ballots with fewer votes than vacancies.
